Join Urban Kai Farms for one of our weekly farming sessions. We meet at The ReMakery (310 Waiwhetu Road, Fairfield, Lower Hutt) and go from there as a team, often coming back for lunch together. Contact Hannah to come and help.

Some sweet little jobs that we need your help with are;

  • Become a harvester or waterer: daily picking of fresh produce for the kitchen or daily watering of our Remakery nursery and other sites; each takes about an hour.

  • Sorting seeds, potting up seedlings, moving plants, watering

  • Writing plant labels (can be done at home)

Learn new skills and meet new people at one of our regular sessions (no experience necessary):

  • Potting around/Pricking out: Mondays 1-3pm, Friday 9.30-12pm, Saturday 10-12pm at the Remakery. Learn how to sow, prick out seedlings, take cuttings and make new plants, over a cuppa and chat.

  • Epuni School Tuesday mornings: 9am - 11.30am. Gardening with the kids, for those with an interest in edible education.

  • Friday growers: 9.30 am - 12.30pm. Meet at the Remakery 9.30am to head off to the farms, then stay for kai and a catch up at the ReMakery afterwards - a good chance for newcomers to find out more about how Urban Kai works and meet other local farmers.

  • Saturday farmers: 10am -12 noon followed by shared kai. Meet at the Remakery 9.45am.

Donate Items

  • Greenhouse shelving/ staging - if anyone has any surplus metal framing (eg old table bases), lightweight but strong metal shelving, and/or plastic bread trays, please let us know.

  • Pots for seedlings - the best ones are 10cm x 10cm x 10cm

The activities vary depending on the seasons, but we firmly believe farming is not a back-breaking activity. Come learn our clever methods for farming without digging! We turn organic materials otherwise destined for landfill into compost, and use chemical-free methods to attract beneficial insects and repel pests. Above all, we care for the soil to enhance the earth and provide the very best for our children – local, organically grown, nutrient-dense fruit and vegetables.

Beautiful produce for purchase

If you want to put some of our fruit and veg on your dinner table, we sell our surplus food through The Common Grocer at low cost. All proceeds go back into the project so we can create more employment, grow more food and feed more children. Ambitiously, we aim to become completely self-funded by 2021.

We welcome offers of sponsorship and donations of organic seeds, fertiliser and equipment.
